Introduction to this blog

Welcome to the Larimer Chorale's Touring Choir blog!  It contains photos and stories from our June, 2015 trip to Poland and Germany which combined singers from both the Larimer Chorale and Voices West from Littleton.

This blog was originally meant to report on the trip, day-to-day, as it happened.  However, due to multiple technologic complications, it has been written mostly in restrospect.  That means we had more time to add lots of pictures and to recall our favorite moments!

Whether you want to take a look at photos, read stories or both, here's how to do it (just in case you are not familiar with how blogs work).

  • Look at the right-hand column of this page.  You'll see a "Blog archive" under which is a long list of postings for particular days or topics.  It's like a table of contents. Click on the post you want to read.
  • After you finish reading or looking at any entry, scroll back up to this archive
  • Look through the archive and click on a new entry for another day or topic.
  • Note: Occasionally several entries might run together on one click.  Just know that there are lots more postings in the Archive (table of contents).
  • Also note, the archive list is posted top down from the most recent entry to oldest.  We can't fix that.  So if you want to see the trip in chronological order, start at the bottom.

Thanks for reading!

Enjoying our time together

It was a very good tour!

On the bus, traveling from city to city, at the opera, sharing a meal, touring a town, singing, rehearsing, -- all were opportunities for the singers and the supportive "roadies" to get to know each other better. Good moments, great music, good people....and good food and drink.

Early morning, Amsterdam Airport, waiting for our flight to Warsaw

(left) Looking good!  On the bus from the airport to a city tour of Warsaw, on very little sleep.

Selfies, happy to have arrived in Warsaw

Post-concert euphoria

Pre-concert anticipation; Bonita Lahey, Voices West,  in the Cathedral Garden

mmmmm....plane food was ok, but it's time for a warm Polish pastry (Norma Lucas in Old Town, Warsaw).
Warsaw Hotel saw to our every (chocolate) need

Chorale supporters and friends relax after a long travel day. (Maxine Mark, Celia Walker, and Carole Oldemeyer)

Polish is NOT an easy language to decipher! But Emily and John still managed to make a delicious choice.

Jim Packard, LC, enjoying lunch on the Krakow square.
Bus break!

The guys, minus the tenorettes

Jane and two birthday girls (Emily and Celia)

Did someone send out a "wear tourquoise" memo?

Larry and Wendy Fenske with Peggy and David Lindstrom

 John Spencer and Norma Lucas

Alex's 200-year-old cello always had a reserved seat on the bus -- a window seat to provide head support for a cello nap.  (John Spencer named the cello "Delilah," a name that Alex found charming, or at least, amusing!)

That's road food, in a truck-stop type of place!  Even the coffee was great!

John Spencer getting the story down.

Sylvia, Patterson, artful and attentive  photographer
Polish breakfast protein, a hard-to-resist display

Judy Cuthbertson, getting that perfect shot before our Wroclaw concert

Dont' know the meaning of the sculpture (the prone head looks ominous), but it lent an artistic touch to this Leipzig- yellow courtyard wall.

(left) Klezmer singer in Kazimierz, Krakow.  Lovely music for dining alfresco  on a summer evening.

Time traveler in Krakow

"White" borscht (cold beet soup -- divine....)

"Red Boscht" -- clear beet broth with dumplings.  Also divine.

Our fans in Wroclaw, Terry and Edjo (Edward) Keenan

David Morse (above), capturing the way the early morning light looks on the flowers in Krakow.

If the coffee is good, Jane Viste will sit down with anyone!

Peggy Lindstrom and Judy Cuthbertson -- a seriously good meal followed by serious conversation

 Beverage of the tour .....

Elaine Gutcher, alto, ready to sing

Pre-concert instructions -- attention will be paid!
Liver, onions, apple slices and mashed potatoes rarely look like art, but these did.

A typical afternoon snack in Leipzig -- typical for some of us, that is!

Elaine Gutcher (alto) and three Chorale friends (Brian Gutcher, Celia Walker and Carole Oldemeyer) enjoy the ambiance of Liepzig at the Coffee Baum, the cafe that Robert Schumann frequented.

TRIVIA QUESTION!!

How did Johann Sebastian Bach die?

"A stroke" you might say.  And that may be true.  But there is also evidence that a few months before he died, attempting to improve his weakened vision, he had a newly discovered surgery to remove cataracts.  Afterward, he developed a bad infection and his stroke followed soon after that.  Too bad he didn't have a Health Care Exchange to compare doctors...

More to that.... Wagner also had diminishing vision, heard about this surgery, and, under the care of the same eye doctor, had the same surgery. He too developed post-surgical infection and died soon after.

INTERESTING.....maybe next time

Our Tour guide's bag.  We THINK it might say "I love Polish Music!" We do too.

Putting on a traveling show

Showing up and singing were the easiest parts of this tour.  What else does it take for a successful tour?
  • An engaged tour company (Tour Resource Specialists), who juggled multiple logistics for us  throughout the tour (yay for Maury, tour manager, and Anna Marie, our ever-present tour guide, timekeeper, and all-around logistics manager).
  • Paddy Shannon's work in organizing the logistics for us prior to the trip
  • The staff at the venues,
  • Repeated and sometimes impromptu rehearsal time for chorus and accompanists,
  • The planning and time Mike spent choosing the music most appropriate for the culture we're visiting, The time Mike spent rehearsing with us and the accompanists, directing us, and keeping our energies focused and unflagging
  • The assistance of chorale members and other travelers who accompanied (our beloved "roadies!") us in hauling, moving, setting up chairs, taking photos, taping cords and a myriad of other tasks.
  • A committed group of singers -- ones who were willing to take their scores of the Polish National Anthem with them to try to learn the words whenever they had a minute!
  • Finding the best possible accompanists who were not only superb musicians, but also terrific people who were a delight to be with.
These things are not just done once.  They are done for each concert, for each day of travel, and in preparation for the next town and concert.  It takes physical and mental energy.  It's amazing we find time to just plain "tour!" We are grateful for all of those who assist in pulling it off!

Lani Mozer and Peg Lindstrom had the Polish National Anthem
learned by the time our plane landed in Warsaw!  Or did they pull
out the music to impress us all and make it look like they were studying?

Maury from Tour Resource Consultants organizes the next few hours
with our Warsaw guide upon our arrival at the Warsaw airport

Yay!  First concert went pretty well.
Paddy and Mike get ready for a well-deserved
group celebration in Old Town Warsaw.

On the bus, off the bus, some kept smiling! Our bus drivers made good time and got us to where we needed to go so that we could look out the windows -- or get to know the person next to us, or write postcards or take a nap.

Carol Oldemeyer (front left), a long-time friend of the Chorale whose husband John was a  member for many years,  is now on the Board. She did plenty of this and that to help out -- especially to take photos while we were singing. Other non-singing travelers played a big part in helping with daily logistics.
Maury (TRC) and John Blackenship (husband of Emily)
haul the piano and sound equipment though the rain
to our performance in Wroclaw.  This had to be done
for every concert, for every venue. As well as setting the
equipment up and taking it down.  Loading on the bus, too!

Here's where that piano and sound equipment have to be loaded -- down all those steps.

All aboard for the water taxi to Wroclaw!  Got your music?  Your instrument?   Your concert clothes?  Umbrellas and shoes?

Assistant artistic director, Jean Johnson finds time to relax with her mom, Gaye Fletcher, in Gorlitz.  Jean conducted a piece and performed solo at each concert.... and, of course would have to be "on call" to direct or lead rehearsals if needed.

Yay, Paddy!  You got us here! Time for a beer or two....(Paddy Shannon relaxing in Gorlitz with Cathy Horvath of Voices West).

John and Sue Miller have traveled with the Chorale on many previous trips, he as 2nd bass in the Chorale, she as both spouse and volunteer nurse for the travelers!  Sue, an RN, always packs a bag of emergency supplies to keep us all safe and healthy during the trip and we are grateful just knowing she is there and prepared.
Carolyn Cline (tour pianist) and her husband Eldie
relax in Goerlitz, a day free of performing.  The couple
had their own personal logistics to consider before leaving
their young children in the capable hands of Carolyn's mom
for 12 days.

Before each concert, setting up.  After each concert, breaking down... thanks to all who helped with the hauling, lugging, re-arranging, setting up and plugging in.

Mike and Maury looking at the glorious and very high ceilings as they ponder set-up and acoustics before our concert in Krakow (and Warsaw, and Gorlitz, and Wroclaw and Leipzig...) .

Mike goes over some final logistics with tour logistician and our intrepid guide, Anna Marie.  Before each concert, Mike also had to figure out the best arrangement of the singers, based on the venue acoustics and space we were given. The arrangement was different every time...

Mike led Warm ups, vocalizations, tuning before every concert and every rehearsal.
