Before Leipzig, a Stop in Gorlitz

Today the choir visited Gorlitz, located on the German-Polish border.  The River Niesse flows through this charming medieval town and, in 1945, the bridge connecting the two parts of the river was destroyed.  Throughout the Cold War and even up to 2000, the bridge was not repaired; however, the Friendship Footbridge was built in 2005 and, with Poland’s acceptance of the Schengen Agreement in 2007, the border control was eliminated.

We found Gorlitz to be stunning. It’s a small city of 60,000 and a friendly place to visit. Our impromptu concert was similar to a flash mob concert. The people who dropped in at the church enjoyed the concert. (Photo by John Spencer)

We visited the Lutherkirche in Gorlitz.  The Martin Luther statue was placed in front of church sometime after 1894.   (Photos by Marian Railsback)
